4 children die in Lucknow after vaccination
Lucknow: Four children died allegedly after they were administered vaccines at primary health centres near Lucknow. Many children are reported to be sick after the vaccination drive was carried out in Mohanlalganj area of Lucknow.
"Four children in villages of Mannawa, Rampur and Khera died shortly after they were administered measles, BCG and Hepatitis B vaccines by a team of government doctors," Director General, Family Welfare, SP Ram, who rushed to the affected area, said.
Parents say their children became unconscious after being vaccinated and didn't recover. "My child was given vaccination and became unconscious. He died," said a victim's mother. Another victim's mother said, "My daughter died after being injected."
The children were vaccinated at 42 centres and deaths have been reported from three centres," said medical officer KP Singh.
Directorate of Health has launched an investigation into the entire incident.
"We are going to the village. The matter is being investigated under DG, Health," said another official YC Singh.
Chief Medical Officer Dr AK Shukla said that the vaccines would be tested.
"The children were administered vitamin A drops and measles vaccine. The District Magistrate has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The vitamin a drops and the vaccine will be tested. Four children are dead but no child has been taken ill after the administration of vaccine and the drops," said Dr Shukla.
"Prima facie it seems that the incident occurred due to spurious vaccine. This is a very serious incident. We will take appropriate action. Compensation of Rs 50,000 will be given to the families," said District Magistrate Anil Sagar.
