Bangalore blast: Karnataka police arrest Madani

Bangalore/Kollam: Ending the eight-day long suspense, PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani was arrested on Tuesday amid high drama from his camp here by the Karnataka Police in connection with the 2008 Bangalore blast case.
Supreme Court said Madani should apply for a regular bail and the competent court shall take the application expeditiously.
Meanwhile, the prosecution has asked for extra time and the hearing in the Madani case has been adjourned till Wednesday.
Chief of Bangalore Police Shankar Bidari, speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN, said that Madani was arrested with the cooperation of the Kerala police as opposed to his claim that he had surrendered himself. Bidari also said that the high court of Karnataka rejected his bail plea. Following his arrest, Madani will be tried in Bangalore. "We have proof against Madani and hopeful that court will take everything into consideration," he said.
Bidari also said that the Bangalore Police will seek transit remand from a local court and try to bring him to the city on Tuesday itself.
Earlier, in a dramatic turn of events, the PDP chief at a press gathering, said that he was ready to surrender in court. His anticipatory bail plea comes up for hearing in the Supreme Court later on Tuesday.
Rejecting charges against him as a conspiracy, Madani said, “I was ready but the police never came. I want to raise my point in court. I will obey the law and I am not involved in the Bangalore blast.”
The PDP leader, while addressing the media in Kollam, said that he was not involved in Bangalore blasts. He also appealed to party workers to refrain from causing any communal tension.
As Madani came out in a vehicle from his camp after mid-day prayers, a heavy contingent of Kerala Police in riot gear blocked the vehicle to facilitate the Karnataka officials to effect the arrest.
The police then took charge of the vehicle allowing only Madani's wife Soofiya and a personal aid to remain with the PDP leader.
Kollam SP Harshita Attalluri, who was leading the Kerala Police team, told reporters gathered in large numbers at the spot that Karnataka Police had arrested Madani.
The entire exercise took place without any immediate law and order problem except some slogan shouting by supporters hailing their leader and women and inmates of the orphanage weeping.
Madani was taken to Thiruvananthapuram en route to Bangalore by air so that he could be produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate there this evening itself.
Madani was listed as the 31st accused in an additional chargesheet filed by the police last month after confessions by suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba operative T Nazir linking him to the Bangalore blasts that left one person dead and 20 others injured.
The states of Karnataka and Kerala have been involved in a bitter war of words over Karnataka Home Minister VS Acharya’s comment that Kerala had not been cooperating on Madani's arrest.
On the other hand Kerala claims that state has been extending all help to Karnataka Police team that is in Kollam to arrest Madani.
