Dantewada: 35 troopers rescued, one Naxal killed
Raipur: Four police personnel are reported missing in the forests of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh as security forces launched a major operation against Naxal in the state. Government sources said that no casualty of state police has been reported so far even as the body of a Naxal has been recovered. Authorities have managed to evacuate 35 personnel and the encounter is still on.
Two companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been sent for rescue operations. But rescue operations are being hampered due to bad weather and heavy rains. A helicopter is on stand by but additional forces have not been airlifted due to adverse weather conditions.
Officials says a 80-member strong team of District Force (DF) and Koya Commando comprising of special police officers (SPOs) had planned an operation after intelligence reports about the presence of a unit headed by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) commander Ganesh Uike in Gumiapal forests. The gunbattle began when Naxals attacked the search party of the state police in a thickly forested area of Gumiapal, close to Kirandul, about 420 km south of capital Raipur, an iron ore mining facility of India's top iron ore producer NMDC Ltd.
On April 6, 75 CRPF personnel and a state policemen were killed in Dantewada after over 100 Naxals ambushed the patrol party and looted weapons.
In another incident on June 29, a large number of heavily-armed Naxals, perched on a hilltop, had opened fire with automatic weapons on a 63-member security contingent which was returning on foot from road opening duty, killing 26 CRPF personnel in Narayanpur district. The dead included a CRPF Assistant Commandant Jatin Gulati.
