Islamic group claims hand behind Hyd attack

Hyderabad: A day after 2 gunmen killed a constable on Friday evening in Hyderabad's old city area, police have recovered a CD allegedly thrown by them before fleeing the spot.

The police have also recovered a letter written in Urdu along with the CD. In the letter, a relatively unknown group which calls itself Tehreek Galba-e-Islam has claimed responsibility for the killings. It claims that May 14 attack was carried out to avenge the deaths of those who died in police firing during the Mecca Masjid blast in 2007 and wants the policemen involved in the firing to be charged.

According to eyewitnesses five police constables were standing near a picket outside the police station when two people on a two-wheeler opened fire at them.

The attack killed one Hyderabad Police constable and injured the other.

Earlier, police sources claimed that the banned Student's Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was behind the attack. They said a SIMI activist, Syed Viqaruddin was suspected to be behind the attack. Viqaruddin was involved in a similar incident of firing on police personnel earlier also.

Meanwhile, the city's police have begun verifying the authenticity of the letter.
