Rs 40 crore lost due to ruckus in Parliament

New Delhi: Disruptions in the first week of the monsoon session of Parliament has cost the the tax payers Rs 40 crore. These disruptions were a result of the Opposition protesting against price rise.
Due to the protests the entire first week of the monsoon session of Parliament ends with virtually no business being transacted. The result of a united Oppositions demand for an adjournment motion on price rise, an effort to embarrass and censure the Government being disallowed, the Government on its part remains unwilling to have a vote with the debate led to the disruptions.
While the right to dissent is the bedrock of any democracy, the stalemate has meant that crores of taxpayers money goes down the drain. An estimated Rs.7.65 crore is spent each day for the functioning of Parliament, which translates into a staggering loss of Rs 38.2 crore for one week alone. The total budget allocated for the functioning of both house and the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry is Rs 535 crore.
While our lawmakers may argue that the loss is notional, and that the issue of price rise, an aam aadmi issue that merited the holding up of proceedings in the house, a look at the roll call in both houses shows just serious our MPs are about matters of national importance.
Every day close to a 100 of our elected MP's were not present in Parliament. On July 26 the total number of MPs absent was 132 while 101 members were missing the next day.
On July 28 the number of MPs absent stood at 91 while on July 29 it was 92.
With both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi missing the first week of the session, many Congress MPs also took it a bit easy. The absenteeism was equally embarrassing for the Opposition that required both numbers and lung power to corner the Government on a range of issues.
