Decks cleared for Jaswant's return to BJP
New Delhi: In what could be the biggest political U-turn of the year, former Union minister Jaswant Singh is headed back into the BJP. Just a couple of weeks back, Jaswant had told CNN-IBN in an exclusive interview that he was missing the party he worked for four decades.
Nine months back, the BJP stalwart was shown the door during the party's Chintan Baithak in Shimla. His crime was he wrote a book praising Jinnah, attacking Sardar Patel. Now, the BJP has decided to forgive and forget. A senior BJP leader said Jaswant was never really a bad individual. The decision to expel him was taken in the heat of the moment. BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar also does not deny the fact any more. "Any decision on this front will be conveyed to you by the party president," he says.
Credit goes to senior leader L K Advani for the 'Bring Jaswant back' campaign. Ironically, it was Lalji, as Jaswant refers to Advani, who was the main focus of Singh's barbs during his months of wilderness.
The first visible signs of Advani's warmth towards Jaswant came during the funeral of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat when Advani took the veteran leader with him in the same aircraft.
A few days later, Jaswant praised the BJP while speaking to CNN-IBN. "BJP is in my blood" is what he had to say.
The announcement would have been made at the BJP's national executive meeting in Patna, but for the Modi-Nitish fiasco. It will be party chief Nitin Gadakri who will make the formal announcement soon.
