Karnataka Lokayukta quits, blames state govt
Bangalore: Chief Lokayukta of Karnataka Justice Santhosh N Hegde resigned on Wednesday citing differences and inaction by the state government of BS Yeddyurappa. He submitted his resignation to Governor HR Bhardwaj.
Justice Hegde was unhappy with the state government for not doing anything on the corruption front despite the Lokayukta having unearthed many scams. "The government has deliberately overlooked and shown indifference over the working of Lokayukta. I have suffered mentally very much. It's frustrating that Lokayukta has lost its meaning and that led me to resign," said Justice Hengde while announcing that he had resigned.
"The government did not even bother to consult me on several occasions. The people suspended by me were immediately reinstated. This is the way things have happened in my state. I did not want to prolong it. I have mentally suffered, I have been deeply hurt. The state government is callous," he said.
Hegde, a former Supreme Court judge, fought the Bellary mining mafia led by influential state ministers - the Reddy brothers. He had also exposed the state flood relief scam. He had raided thousands of government officials and a few MLAs too.
However, special representative of Karnataka government Dhananjay Kumar claimed that the state government has always been serious to root out corruption.
"State government is also equally serious about fighting corrupt people. The government has been taking action against those involved in corruption and has launched a crusade against illegal mining. Inquiry is already going on and the accused will be brought to book," said Kumar.
He also added that Justice Hegde should not have resigned and the government would have taken action on his recommendations.
