Govt slept, wheat was wasted: official report
New Delhi: The 15,000 metric tonnes of wheat rotting in floodwaters in Sirsa, Haryana, could have been saved well in time. That is a government officer saying it, not some NGO.
CNN-IBN has accessed the report submitted by the Jitender Narain Committee, which criticizes the Food Ministry for not protecting wheat kept in Food Corporation of India (FCI) storehouses though it had been warned about the floods well in advance.
In Sirsa, the floodwaters from the Ghagghar canal breach reached the granary site in 10 days. The Narain Committee also came down hard on the FCI's liquidation policy calling it weak. The report says officials sit on excess stock when it could have been distributed to the poor. The report also criticises the Ministry for not decentralising decision-making powers.
