Bihar MLAs get dirty, throw sandals at Speaker
Patna: It is dirty and disgusting in the Bihar Assembly. Opposition MLAs allegedly threw a pair of sandals at the Speaker on Wednesday after he suspended 16 of them for rowdy behaviour.
Those suspended included 10 RJD MLAs, two from LJP, one each from the CPIM and CPI-ML and two independents. The MLAs were marshaled out of the House by the watch and ward staff.
As the staff lifted RJD MLA Bablu Dev, his party colleagues towards him and a slipper was thrown at the Speaker Udai Narayan Choudhry. Choudhry then ordered that all MLAs protesting in the well of the House be removed and suspended 58 more of them. The entire Opposition walked out the House in protest against the suspensions. This was the second consecutive day that the Assembly was held up by the Opposition, which wants Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to resign over a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report alleging financial irregularities in the state.
RJD, LJP and Congress MLAs came to blows with ruling of the ruling JD-U and BJP alliance and at on time the lawmakers threw furniture at each other and broke microphones on Tuesday. Around 80 BiharOpposition MLAs spent the night in the well of the two houses of the state legislature. The OppositionMLAs and MLCs said they would continue their dharna (sit-in protest) in both the Houses till Kumar resigns.
"We will not lift the agitation till this corrupt government resigns", RJD deputy leader in the AssemblyShakeel Ahmad Khan told PTI today. He alleged that the agitating members in the two Houses were not provided food in the night and breakfast this morning.
"It reflects that the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has lost his mental balance following his involvement in the scandal and is desperately trying to gag the opposition", Khan alleged. He said that the agitation in both the Houses would continue till the demand was met.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had termed the incident as "unwarranted, unfortunate" and an "attempt to seek publicity."
"Whatever happened in the Bihar Assembly was really unfortunate. There is a way to put across your point in parliamentary democracy. I would just sit and request them to solve their problems through discussions," Speaker Choudhry told CNN-IBN on Tuesday.
RJD leader Lalu Prasad and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan have not condemned the MLAs' conduct and are likely to step up their agitation for the Chief Minister's resignation.
