India tells Pak to act against 26/11 masterminds
Islamabad: India and Pakistan are making some headway in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attackinvestigations. Home minister P Chidambaram has told Pakistan that India expects more action against those involved in the Mumbai terror attacks. The Central Bureau of Investigation will also work withPakistan's Federal Investigative Agency on the investigations.
A day after delivering a very tough message to the Pakistani leadership on the Mumbai investigations, Chidambaram came together for a joint press conference with Pakistan's Interior Minister Rahman Malik. "The outcome of our meeting will be very good for both countries," said Chidambaram while addressing a joint press conference with Malik in Islamabad on Saturday. As a result of the talks with Chidambaram, Malik announced that Pakistan's FIA would work with the CBI onMumbai investigations; in the light of the new evidence Pakistan would reconsider the case against Hafiz Saeed. Malik also said that Pakistan understood Mumbai attacks mattered to India and was prepared to help fight its war on terror
"We would like our FIA and their investigator on the CBI side to interact with each other on matters of terrorism including Mumbai," said Malik.
But sources say it was the dossiers that got the latest assurances from Pakistan. During his discussions Chidambaram apparently made his mission clear that Pakistan must acknowledge that 26/11 could not be forgotten, and would pursue more action against the Mumbai masterminds.
Sources say Chidambaram also handed over more documentary audio visual evidence against Hafiz Saeed, inputs from Lashkar-e-Toiba's 26/11 convict David Coleman Headley and India's concerns over the increase in infiltration over the Line of Control with a list of Pakistani nationals allegedly caught or killed in Jammu and Kashmir.
From Thimpu to Islamabad eventually it was a SAARC meeting that once again provided the platform for India-Pakistan contact at a high level. As Chidambaram headed back to Delhi after meeting his Malik, he could be assured that he had the set the stage for the next meeting - of the Foreign Ministers in Islamabad in July.
