La Mart says it will act according to its rules
Kolkata: La Martiniere for Boys says it took “proper action” when a student of the school committed suicide after allegedly being “punished and humiliated” by his teachers but insists that it’s not bound to follow the recommendations of a panel investigating the boy’s death.
Supriyo Dhar, secretary of the school, told CNN-IBN La Martiniere was not bound by the probe conducted by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) into Rouvanjit Rawla’s death. Ashok Agarwal, a member of the three-member NCPCR team that investigated Rouvanjit's suicide, has said that he doesn’t rule out the possibility of humiliation and corporal punishment leading to Rouvanjit's suicide.
Dhar, however, hinted that the school will decide what action to take against teachers. “We are not awareof the NCPCR's report. First it has to made known to us officially. We are totally unaware of it,” said Dhar
“There are certain Acts regarding the NCPCR--they first have to recommend it to the state government for action. They can also approach the Supreme Court or the High Court for action. In both cases we will be served a notice and we will proceed accordingly,” he said.
“NCPCR rules are not binding at all. We have taken proper action as per the Right to Education Act,” said Dhar.
The NCPCR has recommended a comprehensive law prohibiting corporal punishment in schools. It has recommended that the school principal Sunirmal Chakravarti be suspended.
