MP CM blames inadequate laws for Bhopal verdict
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has termed as "inadequate" the present laws dealing with industrial safety and security in the light of the Bhopal gas tragedy verdict which was delivered on Monday after 26 years of the disaster.
On the local court judgement on the gas tragedy, Chouhan said, "the present laws are inadequate in dealing with the tragedy of the nature of world's worst industrial disaster.
The quantum of punishment in this case is too little and laws should be amended to ensure maximum punishment to the guilty persons in such sensitive cases."
He demanded from the Prime Minister amendment of the laws and, if necessary, framing of new ones to minimise people's sufferings.
The decision which was given after over two decades of the tragedy has dealt a big blow to the people demanding quick justice in such sensitive matters.
He also demanded from the Centre necessary assistance for the rehabilitation of the gas victims and said that for last ten years, Central government has stopped sending assistance for the welfare of the victims.
