Mumbai airport on hijack alert
MUMBAI: Red alert was sounded at Mumbai airport and security was beefed up following a hijack alert on Thursday. The alert, which came from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), said a flight from Mumbai faced a hijack threat, possibly from Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives. Following the alert, security checks at the airport were intensified.
Sources said the IB had chanced upon an LeT website which said Ajmal Kasab should be exonerated and that his death sentence was unfair. Following on this lead, the IB investigation pointed towards a possible hijack situation to rescue the lone surviving 26\11 attacker.
"We have increased the security checks. Though arrangements have already been thorough, vigilance on key areas has been increased," an airport official said.
Sources said the threat was received almost 15 days ago. Home ministry sources added that there was always a terror threat ever since Kasab was in the police custody.
