Naxals didn't slit CRPF men's throats: top cop

New Delhi: Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Vishwa Ranjan has dismissed reports that some Central Reserve Police Force personnel killed in a Naxal ambush on Tuesday had their throats slit and heads smashed by the rebels. The DGP claimed that none of the CRPF personnel were tortured by the Naxals and the injuries were caused by bullets.
"A bullet injury in the head or the neck can cause severe damage on the rear side of the neck, which people have thought that it is a slit injury. Similarly a lot of bullets at the same place, if a person has been hit by three or four bullets at the same place, it can lead to a false impression that someone has tried to cut off the hands. That is not the case and wee talked to the doctors and they said all are bullet injuries," said Ranjan. Ranjan said that the CRPF personnel did fight back during the ambush and managed to inflict casualties on the rebels. "In this case, let me tell you, now it is confirmed that counter ambush drill was conducted and they have hit 11 Naxalites who have died, five have been very seriously injured and two are very critical. It is not that the CRPF did not fight back. That is the first point I would like to make clear. Second, the best forces in the world have made mistakes in assessment of ground situations in jungle warfare, insurgency. Things are extremely dynamic and flexible and we have to be equally dynamic and flexible in our responses," he said.
He added that CRPF would continue to be a part of the anti-Naxal operations.
"There is some misunderstanding among general public that road domination and area domination is not an operation. It is in fact an operation. You cannot launch a surgical operation in an area which you do not dominate. It is another thing that in the last two-three very quickly we have lost people. But if you see the total number it is coming down and I would also like to tell that the numbers of encounters are going up. The number of arrests of Naxalites is going up. So the overall situation is not as scary as it looks," Ranjan added.
Admitting that intelligence sharing between the CRPF and state police needs to improve, Ranjan said that there were "difference between forces but once we are on a joint operation we work together".
He added that the fight against Naxals would lead to casualties and "we have to live with them".
According to the preliminary post-mortem reports, which came out on Thursday, the personnel were brutally killed by the Naxals and around three to four bullet wounds were found on all the 27 CRPF personnel bodies.
A police officer claimed that after the ambush the Naxals slit open throats and smashed the heads of some of the security men.
