Sri Lanka progress to 91/1 at lunch
Galle: Sri Lanka took a steady start on Sunday against a depleted Indian bowling attack reaching 91-1 in the opening session of the first cricket Test.
Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat first at Galle International Stadium after a half hour delay because of a wet ground. His openers provided a decent start sharing 55 runs before the first wicket fell.
Tillakartne Dilshan hit six boundaries to score 25 runs before he was caught by wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to give seam bowler Abhimanyu Mithun his maiden test wicket.
Tharanga Paranavitana (35 not out) and Kumar Sangakkara (25 not out) played patiently to prevent further losses until the break.
Mithun bowled impressively and recorded 1-31 off eight overs.
India comes into the match suffering from injuries to its key bowlers Zaheer Khan and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth. Offspinner Harbhajan Singh is still looking weak after recovering from the flu.
This match is Muttiah Muralitharan's last test in an 18-year career and 133 matches.
Muralitharan who holds the world record for the most number of test wickets, is just eight wickets away from becoming the first bowler to reach 800 Test wickets.
