2 dead in police crackdown, Srinagar tense

Srinagar: Protests broke out in Srinagar after the death of two protesters, allegedly after the police and CRPF fired at mobs pelting stones.
A man was killed on Monday night when security personnel allegedly opened fire at a mob protesting the death of a man who drowned to death after falling into a drain while being chased by the police in Batamaloo. Police said the protests in Batamaloo began late Monday night when a group of men started throwing stones at a security contingent. When the protesters were running away from security personnel, Muzaffar Ahmad fell in a drain. His death triggered a fresh round of protests this morning with a mob hurling stones at CRPF and local police. Security personnel opened fire after lobbing tear gas shells when they were surrounded by protesters from all sides. Fayaz Ahmad Wani died in the firing, a police spokesman said.
Wani was a resident of Gangbug in Srinagar, the spokesman said. The situation in state capital was tense and additional police forces have been called in and all schools and educational institutions have been asked to close.
Markets also remained closed. Kashmir had witnessed violent protests following the killing of youths allegedly in firing by security forces.
