Sonia steps in to help Kanpur boy's family

New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has stepped in to help Kanpur boy Aman Khan's family. She asked Congress MP from Kanpur Sriprakash Jaiswal to ascertain the facts and give the family all help it needed after Aman's mother blamed the stringent security restrictions put in place in Kanpur during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's tour to the city on July 3 for her son's death.
Jaiswal, however, blamed the state government for the 10-year-old boy's death and said the tragedy had noting to do with the Prime Minister's security.
Aman had died on his way to the hospital on July 3 as his family was unable to reach the hospital in time because the state police had allegedly stopped them from going further as route was closed due to Manmohan Singh's tour to the city.
Aman's mother Usha Sharma had written a letter to Sonia asking her to ensure that such incidents did not happen again. Aman had suffered head injuries on July 3 after the iron gate at his home in Shyam Nagar fell on him.
Tahadud Hussain Khan, Aman's father, claimed that he tried to take Aman to Regency Hospital in Sarvodaya Nagar, but was delayed because of traffic restrictions.
"The police had blocked Grand Trunk Road near Coca-Cola Chauraha, about a kilometre from the hospital," Khan said. "I pleaded with them to let us pass but they diverted my car towards Nazirabad police station. There was heavy traffic on this route, and it took us nearly 30 minutes to reach Regency. Had they let me through on GT Road, I would have reached the hospital in five minutes."
Khan said that Aman bled to death in the car. "He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital".
Khan told CNN-IBN that he had shown policemen that his son was bleeding and needed to be taken to the hospital quickly but the police refused him.
Mukesh Meshram, the District Magistrate of Kanpur, said the family was not delayed for more than 15 minutes and it was wrong to blame the police or the PM's security for the child's death.
