Kashmir erupts again, four killed in firing
Srinagar: Four people have been killed in three separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. One person each was killed in Pattan and Kupwara while two died in Sopore as security forces fired at curfew-defying mobs indulging in stone-pelting. The person killed in Pattan has been identified as 60-year-old Ali Muhammad Khandey.
At least 20 persons have also been injured in the violent incidents so far.
The Central Reserve Police Force opened fire after a mob tried to attack its camp in Bomai, Sopore. Seperatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, who was allowed to lead Friday prayers after six weeks in Srinagar also toughened his position on talks with the Centre.
Farooq rallied his supporters at the Jamia Mosque in Srinagar, adamant that the proposal for autonomy is not enough
"We will talk only if New Delhi accepts our four-point formula, to demilitarise, revoke AFSPA, release detenues, move out police and security forces in civilian areas," he said.
For the ruling National Conference, it has been a big blow. The party was counting on the promises given by the Prime Minister at the all-party meet, and the month of Ramadan, to do some much needed damage control.
But yet again it is a Friday that has come to haunt the Omar Abdullah government as a few days of deceptive calm later, the cycle of violence continues to claim lives.
