No flood alert as Yamuna crosses danger mark
New Delhi: The water level of Yamuna River has crossed the danger mark due to incessant rains here in the last five days, and the authorities are preparing themselves for further surge in water level. The river has already crossed the danger mark of 204 meters following heavy rains in the capital and is now flowing 11 cm above the danger mark, a senior official said.
With the rains still continuing water levels are expected to rise further this morning after Haryana released over 2 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathnikund Barrage on Thursday. But authorities say there is no cause for worry yet.
So far no flood alert has been issued in the National Capital Region. The authorities said that even if rising water levels breach the Yamuna's banks, only those living along the river would have to be evacuated. Some families living in low-lying areas in east Delhi have been evacuated. If required, relief camps will be set up to provide shelter to the affected people, the official said.
