Madani approaches SC for relief, arrest imminent
Kollam: Amid speculations that the arrest of Abdul Nasser Madani is imminent, prohibitory orders were clamped in and around the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader at Anwarssery near Kollam on Saturday.
Karnataka Police team has been camping in Kerala for the last four days, awaiting the state police's nod to arrest Madani whose anticipatory bail plea has been rejected by the Karnataka High Court. He has now approached the Supreme Court for relief.
The district administration imposed the restrictions under Section 144 against grouping of more than five people as a large number of Madani's supporters converged in the area creating a tense situation. The police had to lob two teargas shells to disperse a crowd in the area. The situation, however, had been brought under control, sources said.
According to police, the ban orders were enforced in Mainagapally and nearby Sasthacottah panchyats.
A strong contingent of police under Kollam SP Harshita Attalluri is camping in the area. Besides, additional contingents of Special Armed Battalion had been sent to the area.
Prohibitory orders have been put in place around Madani's house and the police say they will arrest anyone who interferes in the process.
Signals from Kerala Police was that it would give support to Karnataka Police to execute the arrest after the Independence Day.
Madani was also an accused in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case that claimed 58 lives. However, he was later acquitted in that case.
