50 killed in Leh cloudburst, flash floods


Srinagar: At least 50 persons were killed in Leh after cloudburst and flash floods hit the area.
It is reported that the dead include several jawans of the Indian Army. So far, 43 bodies have been recovered from the disaster affected area. The number of those injured in the incident is estimated to be over 200.
It is also reported that the cloudburst, and the mudslide that followed has caused large scale damage to property.
A CRPF camp, a BSNL office and a hospital building have been severely damaged. Many people are believed to be trapped under the debris of homes that have collapsed. Officials fear the death toll might increase.
According to an Army spokesperson Lt Col JS Brar, the cloudburst in the town of Leh resulted in mudslides.
"There have been heavy rains in Leh region. Last night there were flash floods in the area of Nemo Basma villages. After flash floods, there was a cloudburst in the town of Leh which resulted in mudslides," Lt Col JS Brar, Army spokesperson told CNN-IBN.
Brar says that out of the 163 injured brought to the army hospital for treatment, 3 have succumbed to injuries.
"All lines of communication from Kargil and Manali have been cut off. All our resouces – medical, engineering, manpower have been pressed into service," adds Brar.
