AP govt goes all out to battle swine flu

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has finally fine-tuned its flu fighting measures after more than 200 people have been affected and 21 people have lost their lives. Andhra Pradesh chief minister K Rosaiah asked the health department officials to take all steps to contain the spread of infectious diseases including swine flu in the state.
While health officials are trying their best to contain the disease, the citizens are accusing the government of not doing enough to prevent the deadly disease.

Even though swine flu outbreak is not new in the state, what is baffling the health officials this time is the high death count of the disease. At least 220 swine flu patients have been admitted in the Chesh Hospital in Hyderabad in the past two months. As far as H1N1 is concerned, 83 treatment centres have been established for swine flu management in the state, technical committee is formed with professor and general medicine, microbiology, SPM, chest physicians and state Nodal Officers to review each positive case and each death case, it said.
The government is providing adequate doses of oseltamivir tablets, 80,400 doses for vaccination of medical staff and necessary medical and other equipment being provided, the release said.
The first case of swine flu in India was recorded in Andhra Pradesh in May 2009. The state had witnessed over 50 deaths and close to 800 cases last year. While vaccination for the flu is getting popular, health officials warn that it is effective only in 70 per cent of the cases.
