CWG treasurer quits, but Kalmadi to stay on

New Delhi: Union Sports Minister MS Gill has assured Rajya Sabha that allegations about corruption in the Commonwealth Games will be probed, but he ruled out CWG organizing committee chief Suresh Kalmadi now.
"Have faith in India. India will get there," Gill told opposition members led by Prakash Javdekar of the BJP and Brinda Karat of the CPI-M who raised the issue of delays and corrupt deals related to the CWG.

Former sports minister and nominated member Mani Shankar Aiyar demanded an apex body at the earliest to oversee the CWG work. He said the Group of Ministers (GOM) on the CWG had been a "blatant failure". Regarding corruption in CWG, Gill said his Ministry had written to various ministries, including the External Affairs and Finance Ministries, to take action.
Javdekar said the government should make it clear whether the games would be conducted properly.
Karat said the CWG had turned into a "game of corruption" and it was not "justifiable to give license to corruption for two more months in the name of conducting the CWG".
Gill also confirmed a CNN-IBN report that India is not planning to bid for the Asiad Games but asserted that all Commonwealth projects and stadiums will be ready on time.
In a related development, Anil Khanna has quit as treasurer of the games organising committee. Khanna's son had got contract for laying tennis courts at the games.
