Over 100 killed in Leh flash floods, rescue on
Leh: Over a 100 people are dead and more than 350 people were injured after a cloudburst followed by massive flash floods in Leh on early Friday morning.
Half an hour of heavy rainfall and the picturesque city of Leh has been reduced to wide expanse of mud and rubble.
The inundated airstrip has been operational again but communication lines are still down.
“Around 12:30 am or 1.00 am early on Friday morning, there was a cloudburst in Leh town due to heavy rains in the region over few days. Over 150 km of area has been effected, “ said Indian Army spokesman, Lt Col J S Brar. However, the worst affected region was the Chuglumsar village near the Leh airport which bore the brunt of the overflowing ‘Sabu Nala’. The flash floods and mud slide has blocked the Leh - Srinagar and Leh-Manali highways. The Leh airport too was shut as debris closed off the main runway making it difficult for the rescue and relief teams to reach here.
“Air service hit, airport has debris, BSNL office has been washed away. The natural disaster was the most unprecedented in the history of Ladakh region, “ said Ghulam Hassan Kahn, Lok Sabha MP from Ladakh.
Moreover, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had rushed to the area and even the Central government has provided all the required assistance.
“It seems there is a problem at airport as soon as it get rectified we will be able to rush relief supplies. There are enough rescue operation workers. We only need to check whether they are short of supplies but supply will be rush quickly as airport start working, “ said P Chidamabaram.
The airstrip was badly affected but has now become operational. Finally, relief material and rescue teams have been able to land in Leh to carry out a massive rescue effort. Meanwhile, majority of the district hospitals have been flooded and the highways are severely affected.
